ABOUT DISNEY'S ANIMAL KINGDOM LODGE

You’ve stepped into the heart of Africa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, staying at a horseshoe-curved resort inspired by the traditional African kraal. You have spectacular views of the lush savannas that are home to over 200 different African animals and birds. The question might not be “what to do,” since there is so much to do at this luscious Disney resort, but “what to do first?” In this article, we will discuss the things you will simply not want to miss during your stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Perhaps the first thing you’ll want to do is take a nature hike through the resort grounds. There are over 30 species of African wildlife here, including zebras, giraffes, gazelles, kudu, and flamingos. You’ll find a wildlife field guide in your guest room, and can get extras from the Lobby Concierge. Learn more about the animals and their ecosystems during the Resort’s fun programs led by Animal Specialists.

Next, relax by one of the pools at the Resort, enjoying the African-inspired architecture and the nearby wildlife preserve. A short walk away, at Animal Kingdom Villas, you and your children can enjoy Samawati Springs Pool, which features a 128-foot waterslide. Also included in this pool area is Uwanja Camp, a water playground with fun for children of all ages.

For dinner, consider Boma – Flavors of Africa. This buffet-style restaurant resembles a lively African marketplace, and is open for breakfast and dinner with all-you-can-eat buffets. The buffet features flavors from more than 50 African countries, along with classic American favorites. You can watch the chefs prepare grilled seafood, roasted meats, and other specialties in the onstage kitchen, and guests 21 years of age and up can try unique South African wines. You’ll want to plan this one in advance, because reservations are required (and can be made up to 180 days prior to your visit.)

Next, wake up before the animals do and enjoy a Sunrise Safari. You’ll board a rugged, open-sided safari vehicle and enjoy the benefits of a small group, which means you can get in-depth information about the animals you encounter and make more stops for photographs. You will cross the Harambe Wildlife Reserve, and see such delightful animals as okapi, lions, giraffes, rhinos, zebras, elephants, and gazelles. The behind-the-scenes information will also give you wonderful insights on Disney’s animal care and park operations.

No matter how young you are, there is something for you to do at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. Be sure to take time out to rest, relax, and enjoy the fine African dining at the Resort restaurants. You should plan your stay in advance, though, so you can take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities that await you in this African wonderland. Hakuna Matata!
